Hazama started out as one of the Six Heroes fighting the Black Beast during the First War of Ars Magus—except he's also kind of the reason the Beast existed in the first place. He created the Azure Grimoire, which accidentally spawned the monster, and spent the war trying to make up for that massive mistake. But once the Beast was dead, he basically went rogue. He killed Nine, one of his fellow heroes and the mother of another hero's child, which. yeah, that's a pretty big betrayal.
He originally piloted the Susano'o Unit armor before Hakumen took it over. The theory goes that after he realized he was permanently linked to the Master Unit while wearing it, he deliberately ejected himself—possibly why he exists now as a ghost inhabiting an artificial body instead of, you know, being alive.
Hakumen managed to seal him away in the Boundary by pulling him in, with Jubei's backup. He stayed trapped there until Takamagahara let him out right before the events of Calamity Trigger.
