An independent Ranger cadet with idealistic ambitions, he's acutely aware of the corruption running through the Keeper organization but believes the system can be reformed from within—that they just need to reconnect with their original values of justice. Everything changes after an attack meant to target D leaves him badly disfigured. Rather than let D's mission fall apart, he makes the call to swap identities, allowing D to continue undercover using his name and credentials for the bulk of the series. What actually happened to him after that remains a mystery.
