He's the patriarch pushing Makoto to abandon music and take over the family business instead. That tension between what he wants for his son and what Makoto actually wants to do is pretty central to his character—he's not necessarily a villain about it, just a guy who sees the practical choice and can't understand why his kid won't take it.
