Sokotani grew up poor and isolated—people rejected him for his appearance and station. Things got darker when his mother took her own life, but that's when Balta showed up and basically became his guardian angel. With Balta's help, Sokotani managed to scrape together enough money for plastic surgery to completely transform his face and escape poverty.
The new look didn't solve everything though. Despite having the money and the appearance he'd always wanted, he still couldn't actually talk to girls or connect with people—his social skills were basically nonexistent. This led him to become obsessed with Kanade. He basically threw himself at Kanade's feet, offering to work for him as a subordinate. Kanade agreed, but with a catch: Sokotani would have to capture another God Candidate first to prove his worth.
