Barestar
One of the Fourteen Lances, Barestar came from a merchant family and was the youngest of three brothers. Never cut out for business—he was insecure and clumsy with it—he got tapped as an imperial envoy instead, largely because he was physically gifted. He and Ascheriit were close, and he was one of the few among the Seven Heroes who actually grasped the human cost of what they were doing.
After becoming a hero, something broke in him. Whether guilt ate away at him or corruption set in, he spiraled into excess and bitterness, particularly toward Glenn. He resented that Glenn got the war airships while he didn't, so he secretly retrofitted his own fortress into a flying castle loaded with Wischtech weapons. Eventually he became so paranoid—especially after Schtemwolech died—that he saw threats everywhere. He attacked the city of Jullas-Abllas on pure suspicion that its people supported Koinzell, which obviously backfired; the citizens turned against him instead. His own soldiers abandoned him, and that was the final push into complete madness.
When Koinzell finally caught up with him, Barestar's mind had retreated entirely. He mistook Koinzell for a comrade from the war, someone who'd once saved his life, and asked for help getting home to his family. Koinzell killed him in that confused state—a mercy, really. Ascheriit is the only one who shows any real remorse about it.
He embodies Greed among the Seven Deadly Sins, driven by envy of Glenn's power and an insatiable hunger for everything Glenn had.
