Rumi's a lonely kid at school who everyone basically hates. When Hayato tried to help by talking to her publicly, it totally backfired—just gave the other kids more ammunition to pick on her. So Hachiman and the others came up with a pretty harsh plan: they'd have Hayato and Kakeru act like bullies during a treasure hunt, threatening Rumi's classmates and exposing how selfish they actually are. The idea was that once everyone saw through each other like that, they'd stop coordinating their bullying. The downside? Rumi probably wouldn't end up with friends anyway. But at least the organized harassment would stop.
