Russia's the world's largest country by area, and he looks the part—a tall guy with an intimidating presence that kind of contradicts his sweet, almost innocent demeanor. Thing is, that sweetness doesn't run very deep. He's genuinely unhinged, though he doesn't seem to realize it. His light blonde hair and violet eyes are pretty distinctive, though early artwork showed him with blue eyes instead, and the anime went with a beige shade for his hair.
His relationship with his sisters is complicated. Ukraine essentially raised both him and Belarus, and she's the one who gave him that iconic beige scarf (pink in the anime). Belarus, meanwhile, is completely obsessed with him and desperately wants to marry him. Thinking about either of them tends to send Russia spiraling into depression.
Historically, Russia controlled the Baltic Brothers—Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia—who basically worked as servants in his house. He was openly cruel to them, and Latvia got the worst of it, constantly teased for his height. Lithuania received special "attention" too; Russia once forced him to come along on a trip specifically to ruin a date he had with Belarus.
China, his southern neighbor, is terrified of him and deeply suspicious. Russia keeps insisting they should "become one," but China wants nothing to do with it. Russia's stalked him more than once, and famously dressed up as a panda to do it.
Personality-wise, Russia's a walking contradiction. He comes across as pure-hearted and innocent, but there's a childlike cruelty underneath—the kind that would be endearing if it wasn't genuinely unhinged. He smiles cheerfully while being, essentially, insane. He blames his harsh winters (personified as "General Winter") for making him hate snow, and he dreams of living somewhere warm surrounded by sunflowers. His love for vodka is almost religious; there's a story about him screaming "VODKA!" while jumping out of a plane without a parachute.
When he gets angry, he chants "kolkolkol" as a threat—a reference to the kolkhoz, the Soviet collective farming system.
A quick note on his name: fans often romanize it as "Braginski," but "Braginsky" is more accurate. The "-sky" ending is typically Russian, while "-ski" is Polish.
