Sakamoto ran a rival gang that seized most of the turf Urameshi controlled before his death. The thing is, during that takeover, a demon possessed Sakamoto—and that possession became Yusuke's first case after he came back to life. So basically, Sakamoto got caught up in the supernatural stuff pretty early on, whether he realized it or not.
