Futami's best known for his dramatic redemption arc—he was literally a thief before Hagoromo Ootsutsuki turned his life around. He became Hagoromo's first and most loyal follower, which basically makes him a foundational figure in the whole Sage of Six Paths mythology. Later, he served as the Sage's personal advisor, cementing his role as someone genuinely important to the early ninja world's history.
