Wade Wilson's early life is pretty murky, but at some point he ended up joining Project X. His mercenary career that followed is equally shrouded in mystery—most of what we know comes from scattered stories he's told over the years.
He spent time in Tangier romancing a woman named Francie, but when that fell apart, he drifted through Asia. In Japan, a crime lord called the Boss hired him to infiltrate a rival's sumo-wrestling operation. Wilson trained under the Oyakata for three years and fell for his mentor's daughter, Sazae. When the Boss eventually ordered the Oyakata's death, Wilson turned down the job—allegedly the first time he ever refused a contract—and headed to America instead.
Stateside, Wade met Vanessa Carlysle, a mutant teenage prostitute, and they fell hard for each other, talking about building a real life together. But then Middle Eastern employers hired him to kill Blind Al, a blind British operative stationed in Zaire. When he arrived at her base, he killed everyone there except Al, who managed to escape. His employers weren't thrilled about the failure and decided to punish him by going after Vanessa. She ended up getting rescued by Zoe Culloden, who worked for the interdimensional outfit Landau, Luckman, Lake, and LeQuare.
It turned out Culloden had been watching Wilson, convinced he was going to be crucial in some future world-threatening crisis. Around this same time, Wilson found out he had cancer. Rather than make Vanessa stick around while he deteriorated, he broke things off and stopped his chemo treatments entirely.
