He's the main protagonist and comes from the branch family of the Tsuchimikado clan—which is pretty ironic considering he was born without any magical powers. Growing up in a family of distinguished onmyouji who could actually do magic, he just accepted that he wouldn't be accomplishing much of anything in that world. So he settled into a normal, pretty laid-back life instead.
The thing that defines him, though, is a promise he made to Natsume when they were kids: he'd become her shikigami and protect her. That commitment shapes who he becomes and drives a lot of what happens in the story.
