Enki is one of Raizen's oldest friends—not the sharpest demon around, but absurdly strong. He won the demon world tournament and took the throne by defeating Mukuro, who'd already burned through most of her power in a brutal fight with Natsumi (yet another member of Raizen's friend group). As king, Enki announced a tournament three years out to find his successor and made it clear: no causing trouble in the human world on his watch. It was basically his way of honoring Raizen's memory. He lowered the barrier between worlds as a result, so demons could move freely between realms, though they couldn't actually harm humans anymore. He's married to Koko, who also goes way back with Raizen.
