Yumiko is Maya's older sister and works as a doctor while also operating for the CDC. She's known for mentoring the Fafner pilots and making a real effort to give them normal, pleasant experiences outside of combat—something they desperately need.
Before everything went south, she had dreams of making it as an idol in Tokyo, but reality forced her to let that go. She and Michio dated for a while, then broke up when he left, only to reconnect after he returned. Eventually they move in together, both trying to make the most of whatever time they have left. Yumiko becomes the first naturally conceived child born in Japan in 30 years, which is significant given everything happening in the world.
