Touma transferred to PK Academy after his parents divorced, which is where he reconnected with Kusuo—though Kusuo didn't recognize him at first. His last name had changed from Asumi, and more importantly, Touma's thoughts jump around so erratically that Kusio's telepathy can't keep up. This made Kusuo initially think Touma might be another esper himself. When Touma brought up an old incident from their grade school days, Kusuo panicked enough to petrify him on the spot. He then attempted to undo the whole thing by traveling back in time, but when that didn't work, he unfroze Touma and decided to come clean about his powers. Touma became the third person at PK Academy to learn Kusuo's secret.
Touma's always been the type to say exactly what he's thinking, without much of a filter. Even as a kid, he'd blurt out whatever came to mind—like mocking his bully Takashi instead of staying quiet about it. His lack of social awareness extends to casually bragging about his friends; he famously announced to the entire class that Saiki was an esper, convinced he was just sharing cool facts. As he's gotten older, this trait has made him increasingly annoying, especially to Kusuo. Touma's mind works at the same speed his mouth does, and the constant stream of dual, overlapping thoughts pouring out of him makes it nearly impossible for Kusuo to focus on just one line of thinking.
