Huwan grew up as the neglected second son, essentially treated like a servant compared to his older brother. He signed on for the Bugs mission primarily to earn enough money to escape that situation. He's got a real talent for making Chinese-style fried rice and is apparently obsessed with Fist of the North Star—it's basically his favorite music.
He first showed up on the spaceship Bugs #2, where he was already making his opinions known. He watched Shokichi mess around with the others and told John he thought Japanese people in general were way too uptight. That pretty much set the tone for how he'd interact with the crew.
