Barry's a hyperactive Sinnoh trainer best known for his impatient personality and obsession with speed—he literally carries a Pokétch to time things. When he first met Ash, he demanded payment for the collision within seconds and got visibly irritated that Ash was too confused to react fast enough. Classic Barry move.
He's a huge admirer of Paul's training style and wants to build that same ruthless strength, so he focuses on catching powerful Pokémon and pushing them hard. That said, he's not quite as cold as Paul about it—he actually cares about his team, which sets him apart.
Barry and Dawn both grew up in Twinleaf Town, though he has no memory of her. He only really remembers Ash, Brock, and Dawn because they all competed against him and Paul in the Sinnoh Double Battle Tournament. He's also pretty close friends with Kenny, who happens to be Dawn's rival.
