Io is the older sister of Rio and Hokuto Umeda, and Minami Nanba's mother. She shows up in volume three of Hana-Kimi asking Hokuto to help out at her inn, but he basically dodges the request by volunteering Mizuki, Sano, and Nakatsu instead—then bolts before she can push back. While Mizuki's changing, Io accidentally discovers she's actually a girl, and from that point on she's pretty supportive, even giving her some better-fitting vests to help with. well, the physical changes that come with being a teenage girl living as a guy.
