Hotaru started out as an ordinary firefly before the mountain God transformed her into an Ayakashi as a reward for her loyalty and service. The transformation gave her a humanoid form, though she never quite lost that gentle, luminous quality about her.
She's best known for her one-sided love for a human who can no longer see her. Despite this heartbreaking limitation, she's managed to form a genuine friendship with him anyway. It's the kind of quiet, unrequited devotion that defines her character—she cares for him even though he's moved past the ability to perceive her presence.
The dynamic between them is bittersweet. He can't see her anymore, yet she remains by his side, connected to him in ways only spirits understand. Hotaru has learned to find meaning in this bond, even if it's fundamentally unequal and unreciprocated in the romantic sense.
