Emil shows up in episode 3, inviting Elaina over for breakfast at his place. He's the mayor's son in one of the towns she passes through, and he's completely hung up on Nino, the family's house servant. Rather than just confessing or whatever, Emil's come up with this whole thing where he distills happiness—literally extracting the feeling from happy moments people have experienced—and he's planning to give it to her as a gift. It's the kind of grand romantic gesture that probably seemed foolproof in his head.
