Bede is one of your rivals in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and he's basically the poster child for a redemption arc. He started out as an arrogant kid—seriously full of himself about his skills as a trainer and his sponsorship from Chairman Rose. The guy was desperate to prove he deserved the hype, constantly trying to show everyone he was worth the attention. He could be pretty rude about it too, which probably stems from growing up in an orphanage and not getting a ton of normal social interaction.
Things fell apart when Rose yanked his Gym Challenger endorsement, but Opal saw potential in him and brought him on as her successor. That's when his whole thing changed—he swapped out his Psychic-type specialists for Fairy types to match his new Gym role. More importantly, he actually mellowed out as a person. By the time he'd settled into the position, he'd dropped the attitude enough to actually sign autographs for fans instead of brushing them off like he used to.
