Kaz runs the Kaz Gym in Dark City and is locked in a bitter rivalry with Yas, who operates a competing gym across town. Both are desperate to get their gym recognized as the official one—mainly because it means money. They've been at each other's throats constantly, with their students caught in the middle, making life pretty miserable for Dark City residents.
Things come to a head when Kaz's Electabuzz faces off against Yas's Scyther. During the battle, Ash and his crew accidentally spill ketchup all over both Trainers and their Pokémon. Since both Electabuzz and Scyther have a serious problem with the color red, they flip out and turn on their own Trainers instead of each other. The situation spirals from there—Kaz and Yas both end up chasing after Ash, Misty, Brock, and the local kids who were involved. Pikachu breaks things up with a Thunder attack.
Kaz's shot at running an official Gym and making serious cash gets shut down hard when a Nurse Joy, undercover as an inspector from the Pokémon Inspection Agency, reveals herself and tells him and Yas that neither of them are fit to be Gym Leaders.
