Ellen is Mary's mother and runs a Mareep ranch in a valley between Violet City and Azalea Town. She showed up in the episode "Mild 'n Wooly."
At first, Ellen comes across as pretty strict—she scolds Mary for letting one of the Mareep get loose and isn't afraid to scare Ash's Pikachu to make a point. She flat-out refuses to let Mary enter the upcoming Mareep Festival, insisting her daughter is too young and doesn't take proper care of her Mareep, Fluffy. But she's not unreasonable; after watching Mary battle Team Rocket with some solid strategy and skill, Ellen has a change of heart. The next morning she hands over her old Poké Ball and finally gives Mary the green light to compete.
