Naota Nandaba is the twelve-year-old protagonist of Fooly Cooly, and his entire character is built around a contradiction: he's desperately trying to seem mature while the world around him gets increasingly ridiculous. His name literally means "honesty" in Japanese—his father picked it specifically for that reason—but Naota spends most of the series pretending nothing strange ever happens, even as reality warps around him. The thing is, he's got what the series calls "the right kind of head," which makes him useful as an N.O. channel, though he has no idea this is why weird stuff keeps happening to him.
He's kind of a snob about what he eats and drinks. He won't touch anything sour, bitter, or pulpy, and spicy food is completely off-limits—Amarao even tells him to ease up on the sour drinks at one point. Beyond that, Naota hero-worships his older brother Tasuku to an almost religious degree. He carries around Tasuku's old baseball bat and even hangs out with Tasuku's ex-girlfriend Mamimi, all because he sees his brother as the gold standard of adulthood. Meanwhile, every actual adult in his life—his father, grandfather, teacher—strikes him as pathetic and childish. It's the classic kid thing: everyone around you seems to be doing it all wrong.
