Dislikes: Kotetsu Segawa, anyone who hurts Nagi, his parents
Hayate's been grinding since he was eight years old, jumping between jobs to bankroll his parents' disasters—his dad's perpetually unemployed and his mom's a compulsive gambler. It's no surprise they eventually went bankrupt. Because he's constantly getting caught working underage, he never stays anywhere long, but honestly, it's shaped who he is.
He's genuinely selfless, the type to help anyone even if it screws him over. What's wild is his range of skills: he cooks great, keeps a house immaculate, and can spot fake art instantly (thanks to one of his dad's old scams). He's got supernatural strength and speed too, which comes in handy given his role as a butler and all the weird situations he ends up in. His endurance is crazy—he does stuff that shouldn't be possible.
The trade-off? Hayate's pretty dense about romance. His empathy's shaky, so he constantly misreads how people feel about him, especially Nagi. Part of it's his innocent streak and just. general inexperience with how girls think. He also plays violin, which he actually enjoys.
Everyone in the series points out that he looks poor and desperate, which doesn't help his self-image. He's convinced most people hate him, though he's cool with kids—he just doesn't really see them as anything besides friends. Despite his notoriously bad luck, he's earned the "combat butler" title fair and square; he's genuinely skilled at fighting off attacks from basically anything, including other butlers.
