A French-Jewish colonel in the French army with ties to the Qing-Bang, De Guise is best known for his pragmatic approach to combat—he sticks to guns and swords rather than relying on supernatural techniques like Sonkaken, despite knowing the method.
His sister Sophie endured severe trauma fleeing Nazi Germany; her non-Jewish German husband, forbidden by law to marry her, was sent to a concentration camp. The psychological weight of this left her with repressed memories until Kenshiro's acupressure brought them back. Tragically, she was assassinated shortly after by Zhang Tai Yan.
De Guise's own end came when Liú Fēi-Yàn challenged him to a duel, deciding he wasn't fit to care for Erika. Fatally wounded, he seemed finished—but Kenshiro used his acupressure skills to keep De Guise alive long enough to witness something his friends arranged: a vision of Shanghai restored to prosperity, a place where Jews could find safety. Seeing that future within reach and trusting Kenshiro and the others to realize it, De Guise died at peace.
