A blob-like creature wearing a crude white mask, Arakune is best known as a cautionary tale—what happens when someone gets too close to the Boundary. He used to be human, a man named Lotte Carmine who worked with Kokonoe, Tager, and Litchi in Sector Seven. His inferiority complex about Kokonoe's genius drove him to study the Boundary, an obsession that fundamentally transformed him into something barely recognizable. His body now hosts countless insects and seems to shift in size and weight unpredictably.
The transformation left him barely functional as a person. His speech is mostly gibberish, maniacal laughter, and anguished screams—though Litchi's the only one who can reliably understand him. What's unsettling is that Arakune doesn't realize he's changed. To him, his bizarre rambling makes perfect sense, which is why he created that mask thinking it would help others actually listen. He genuinely doesn't understand why people can't just. get what he's saying.
Knowledge and power consumed him, literally and figuratively. He's driven by an insatiable hunger for information and considers the Azure Grimoire the ultimate prize. During Calamity Trigger, he hides in Kagutsuchi's sewers where seithr runs thickest, attacking anyone foolish enough to wander down there and eating victims to keep himself going—especially the Kaka clan. When Ragna shows up, Arakune loses what's left of his coherence, obsessing over the Azure in his possession. "AzureAzureAzureAzure" is basically all he can manage around him.
By Continuum Shift, Arakune's search for the Azure continues, though something strange happens: he briefly regains the ability to speak like a normal person. In that brief window of sanity, he warns Litchi to stop trying to cure him using the same power that destroyed him. He tells her Kokonoe's the one to trust, not whatever method she's considering—there's a line she shouldn't cross or she'll end up like him. It's the most human he's been in years.
Turns out Terumi used Arakune as a failed experiment to create the Black Beast. He didn't have what it took—all he could ever do was consume things. He also harbors a deep hatred for Relius Clover, though the specifics of their first meeting aren't pretty. During one encounter, Relius overpowered him and had his marionette Ignis take him into custody. That captivity becomes leverage—Terumi later uses it to manipulate Litchi into joining the NOL.
