He literally crashed into the Hinata Residence's field inside some kind of capsule, and nobody had a clue who he actually was. So they just. named him Yamada-kun. Pretty random, but it stuck.
Turns out he's actually another Dasonu Maso—basically an alien or whatever you want to call it. The whole "mystery guy in a pod" thing makes a lot more sense in that context.
