Marie's grandfather is a fisherman who appeared in the episode "Type Casting." He's best known for ferrying Ash and his friends across a river when all the bridges in the area had been wiped out by a typhoon about a month earlier. The catch? He wanted them to bring him a rare Sudowoodo first.
Team Rocket got wind of the deal and managed to snag a Sudowoodo before anyone else, but James accidentally scared it off when he tried watering it with his Squirt Bottle—turns out that's not what Sudowoodo needs. Once Marie's grandfather spotted the Pokémon himself, he joined the chase. He eventually reconnected with Ash's group and revealed he actually needed the Sudowoodo to help his granddaughter Marie with her research on the Imitation Pokémon.
The Sudowoodo bolted again, but by that point Marie and her colleague Pierre had seen enough of its behavior to settle whatever debate they were having about its typing. True to his word, Marie's grandfather took Ash's group across the river anyway.
