Orochimaru is one of the series' most formidable antagonists and one of the legendary Sannin—a title bestowed on him, Jiraiya, and Tsunade by Hanzō during the Second Shinobi World War. He's obsessed with capturing Sasuke Uchiha to claim his body and Sharingan, and destroying Konoha itself.
A once-in-a-generation prodigy from childhood, Orochimaru lost his parents young. Jiraiya has suggested his unsettling ambitions stemmed from that loss—ideals that never quite fit the village's values. The Third Hokage recognized his raw talent immediately and actually used him as a model for the other young shinobi, particularly Jiraiya. But the Third also sensed something darker in him: a hunger for power and a malicious streak. Rather than confront it directly, he simply hoped it would fade over time.
It didn't. Orochimaru's thirst for strength only intensified. The turning point came when he visited his parents' grave and discovered the shed skin of a white snake—an encounter the Third Hokage explained as a sign of good fortune. Orochimaru took it as inspiration. He dove into forbidden jutsu and became consumed with mastering every technique in existence.
After abandoning the village, Orochimaru joined Akatsuki, an elite criminal organization. His time there remains largely mysterious, though it's known he worked alongside Sasori and made a play to take over Itachi Uchiha's body for his Sharingan.
