Naoto's basically glued to anything clockwork-related—gears, mechanisms, the whole thing. He gets so absorbed in his tinkering that he doesn't notice much else going on around him, which makes him an easy target for bullying at school.
He's got a pretty strong preference for automata over actual people. His reasoning is straightforward if kind of dark: machines don't age, but humans do. That's a big part of why he'd rather spend time with clockwork than with people. He even called Marie a "fleshbag" when she asked for his help fixing Kyoto's Core Tower, and straight-up refused. The only reason he changed his mind was because RyuZU clued him in that Marie's younger sister was trapped in there—that finally gave him a reason to care enough to help.
