Maria's early life was defined by loss and trauma. Her adoptive parents were killed in war, leaving her to escape into space via pod as a child. She was also subjected to experiments as an infant—a fact that seems to have aged her emotionally and mentally well beyond her actual years.
She's best known as the leader of Quark, an anti-Federation organization that emerged in the 700s. Her interest in Fayt developed partly out of a desire to understand her own mysterious powers, which she didn't fully unlock until Federation forces attacked her. That confrontation forced her to tap into abilities she'd kept hidden, setting her on the path she'd eventually follow.
