Wang started out as a neutral referee during the Great Trembling Conquest of the Unified Eight, but his role evolved into something much closer. He became Edajima Heihachi's best friend and trusted right hand—essentially running things as Acting Principal whenever Edajima steps away. He's a monk at the Shen-Quan Temple, which grounds his character in that spiritual tradition.
