Malachi is a character from the episode "Carrying On!" He runs a carrier pigeon service with his grandfather Denjirō, using their Pidgey to deliver packages and newspapers to nearby islands that don't have ferry access. He's clearly invested in the family business and hopes to take it over once his grandfather retires.
He first meets Ash, Misty, and Brock when they return one of their Pidgey named Ken after it gets injured. Malachi immediately assumes they hurt the bird when he sees its bandage, but the misunderstanding gets cleared up and they become friends. He's genuinely attached to the Pidgey and clearly cares about their wellbeing.
When Team Rocket decides to steal the Pidgey straight out of the sky, things get serious. Malachi teams up with Ash and the others to track them down. They use his grandfather's special training blimp to pursue Team Rocket and rescue the stolen birds. With backup from Ash's Noctowl, they manage to free all the Pidgey and send the villains packing in typical fashion.
