Emerald (known as Esmeraude in the original) is the Black Moon Clan's second major player and easily their most comedic member. She's a vain, self-absorbed woman who obsesses over looking like a goddess—think elegant form-fitting dress, opera gloves, and knee-high stiletto boots. She's instantly recognizable by her signature laugh: loud, piercing, and kind of ridiculous.
Her defining trait is an unhealthy fixation on Prince Demand, which spirals into jealous rage whenever Sailor Moon enters the picture. In the anime, she inherits Rubeus's position after letting him die in an explosion, showing exactly where her priorities lie. Desperate to win Demand's attention and destroy Sailor Moon, she makes a deal with Wiseman, who gives her a magical tiara promising she'll become Neo-Tokyo's queen. Despite suspecting there's a catch, she takes it—and immediately regrets it. The tiara's dark power transforms her into a massive dragon that attacks the Crystal Palace. The Sailor Senshi fight back without realizing what she's become, and Sailor Moon eventually defeats her. In her final moments, Esmeraude briefly reverts to her "queen" form, glowing softly, before a dark void opens beneath her. She falls into nothingness, reaching upward and calling out Demand's name as she disappears.
The manga plays things differently. After her lackeys Chiral and Achiral fail to kill the Sailor Senshi, Esmeraude corners Chibiusa in the 30th century and peels off her gloves to reveal grotesque monster hands. She tries to strangle Chibiusa, then takes on Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus, and Tuxedo Mask simultaneously with her multiple limbs. She's only stopped when King Endymion's spirit empowers Tuxedo Mask, allowing him to unleash Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber and kill her for good.
