Saki was a respected pianist throughout Japan, best known today as Kousei Arima's mother. She had big ambitions for her son—she pushed him relentlessly toward becoming a world-class pianist, partly because she wanted him to achieve what she couldn't, but also out of a genuine (if misguided) concern for his future. She believed that if he became famous enough, he'd be able to support himself after she was gone.
Her methods were harsh. She'd make Kousei practice until he could barely move, and she didn't hesitate to hit him when he made mistakes. It was the kind of intense, abusive training that got results—Kousei became a prodigy—but at a serious cost to his wellbeing. Fans and critics have often noted that Saki's approach, while born from love and fear, ultimately did more damage than good.
