Ren is one of the three Sanada demons—elite ninjas known for their exceptional power. He operates under Misanagi, the Sanada's leader, and fights alongside his fellow demons when Kenshin and his allies, joined by a defector from their own ranks, move to stop Misanagi's plans.
When Ren faces off against Kenshin, he proves more than capable. Using a technique called "Death Run," he neutralizes one of Kenshin's signature Hiten Mitsurugi-ryuu moves. Part of what makes Ren so effective is that Kenshin struggles to close the distance—Baku's bats cast some kind of spell that keeps the swordsman just out of range, leaving him frustrated and unable to land his usual techniques.
