Goro debuted in The King of Fighters '94 as part of the Hero Team alongside Kyo Kusanagi and Benimaru Nikaido. He was specifically created to represent Judo in the cast, and his iconic design—including his geta sandals and distinctive victory cries—stayed largely consistent from early concepts to final version. Back in 1997, Gamest ranked him as their forty-fourth favorite character.
Before joining KOF, Goro was an Olympic gold medalist in Judo. He entered Japan's qualifying tournament to make the national team and made it far, but lost to Kyo in the finals and finished third. Benimaru came in second, and when the two of them teamed up with Kyo for the 1994 King of Fighters tournament, the three quickly bonded into genuine friends.
His competitive fighting career didn't last forever, though. Before the 1997 tournament, Goro's mentor convinced him to return to professional Judo full-time. He agreed to finish that year's King of Fighters and then step away—which he did. Back in the Judo world, he became a celebrated figure in Japan, eventually married, had a son, and opened his own dojo as a mentor.
But old ties pulled him back. In 2001, Benimaru recruited him again after Kyo returned to Japan, and Goro couldn't resist reliving those glory days with his team. He competed again in 2003 with Benimaru and Shingo Yabuki. When Shingo got seriously injured during KOF XI, Goro stepped up once more to reunite the Japan team, reassuring his worried friends that his career and dojo could handle it. He knew the risks were real, but wanted to support them and make his students proud.
By KOF XIII, Goro and Benimaru were watching Kyo face off against Iori again, the outcome unclear.
