Adopted by Genkaku and step-brother to Nanami, he grew up as an orphan who caught a lot of grief for it. He spent his childhood hanging around Nanami and his best friend Jowy, and the three were pretty inseparable. When they hit their teens, both he and Jowy enlisted in the Highland Army's Unicorn Brigade. Thanks to martial arts training from Genkaku, he became a genuinely skilled fighter—probably the strongest of the bunch.
Things went south fast. The Highland Army turned on the Unicorn Brigade and slaughtered them, then pinned the blame on Jowston's Army. He managed to escape and ended up joining Viktor's mercenaries for a while, but that was just a stepping stone. He eventually became the driving force behind the entire Dunan Unification movement and led them straight to victory.
After the war wrapped up, he vanished—disappearing alongside Jowy, who'd become the Highland King, and his sister Nanami. Nobody really knows what happened to them after that.
He's known for fighting with tonfar and wears a circlet and shoulder pads that Genkaku gave him as a kid. Those pieces have stuck with him ever since.
Name variations: The original game never gave him an official name, but adaptations have called him Riou (2000 light novel), Tao (2009 manga), and Riliu (2026 anime).
