Chino is one of the last survivors of the Chinoike Clan. As a young child, she was abducted by En Oyashiro, who collected shinobi with kekkei genkai for his own purposes. He trained her into a ruthless operative, tasking her with hunting down other kekkei genkai users and eliminating threats. By the time she escaped, she'd been with him so long that she'd forgotten what her parents even looked like.
After discovering her entire clan had been slaughtered and fed up with En's treatment, Chino fled and struck out on her own. She eventually met Nowaki, and the two became partners—traveling together and robbing wealthy people to get by. But no matter how far she ran, Chino couldn't shake her resentment toward the villages. She held them responsible for standing by while her clan was destroyed.
The anime tells a somewhat different story. There, Chino met Nowaki (actually named Fuushin) when she defeated him in the Coliseum. They connected over shared pain—both were outcasts because of their abilities, both had lost their families. Determined to find what remained of the Chinoike Clan at the Valley of Hell, Chino convinced Fuushin and two others, along with another shinobi named Karyū, to escape with her. Together they formed the Lightning Group and began stealing from the wealthy to support struggling villages. Things fell apart when Kirigakure got involved, and the group scattered. Only Chino and Fuushin made it to the Valley of Hell—where they found nothing but graves and the bitter confirmation that her clan was gone. That's when her vow for revenge hardened into something unshakeable.
