Ganryu's sumo career came to an abrupt end when he got caught rigging matches in his favor, effectively blacklisting him from the sport entirely. With nowhere else to turn, he ended up working as muscle for Heihachi Mishima. His time under Heihachi was short-lived though—he ran into Yoshimitsu, who not only beat him in a fight but made off with the money Ganryu had dishonestly earned.
By the time of the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, Ganryu had switched employers and was working for Kazuya Mishima instead. The tournament is best remembered, at least by Ganryu himself, as when he developed an obsessive crush on fellow fighter Michelle Chang. The problem? Michelle thought he was nothing but a creepy pervert and had zero interest in him. She made her feelings clear by defeating him soundly in the tournament.
After Kazuya's disappearance following the tournament, Ganryu had little reason to stick around and eventually made his way back to Japan.
