General Chang Jin, who served under Zhu Wen, took in two orphans as disciples years back and trained them in martial arts, giving them his surname. He called them Haoling and Xuanling. After Chang Jin died fighting in battle, the pair got recruited by Hades and became the Black and White Impermanence—the feared enforcers of the Xuanming Sect. They answered directly to Meng Po and both carried a lethal corpse poison in their hands. Haoling was known for being ruthless and calculating, while Xuanling had a more arrogant, showy personality.
