Karai is a shinobi from Kumogakure. He's best known for his involvement in a disastrous mission to Sugi Village, where he and his team stole a forbidden jutsu scroll. On the way back, they were ambushed by the Nokizaru Group—mercenaries hired to get the scroll back. Things went south quickly when the attackers implanted microscopic Exploding Insects into the team. Nigai, another shinobi, lost his cool and fought back, only to detonate and nearly kill himself. Karai made the same mistake but managed to pull back before the insect could finish him off.
His teammate Amai, a medical-nin, tried to treat the wound but couldn't do much about the insect. The situation got desperate enough that they had to call in Tsunade, who had Shizune extract the bug while Amai assisted. Karai survived, though it was touch and go for a bit.
