Shell is a Dim Sum master from San Sei who earned the nickname "Steel Staff Shell" for the heavy steel staff he carries everywhere—part weapon, part cooking tool. Still in his twenties, he's already the youngest Dim Sum Master around, which speaks to his talent.
The staff is basically his résumé. Yellow stars engraved on the end mark each Super Chef he's beaten, but there's also a black star—a loss to Mao that still bothers him. He wants nothing more than to turn that black star yellow someday.
Since childhood, Shell has been traveling all over China to deepen his cooking knowledge, which makes him something of a nomad. He and Mao's group keep running into each other on the road. He's got an optimistic outlook on life and isn't shy about calling people out when he thinks they're wrong, especially Shirou. That tension started when Shirou accidentally served him a terrible dish early on, and Shell never quite let it go.
Beyond cooking, he's surprisingly athletic and solid with numbers. Eventually he joins Mao and the others on their hunt for the Legendary Cooking Utensils.
His Hokkien name is Ji Long.
