A friendly shape-shifter and tanuki youkai who's managed to befriend Miroku—no small feat. Hachi (short for Hachiemon) is best known for his mischievous side; he once impersonated Miroku to peddle fake seals and flirt with women, which obviously didn't end well when the real Miroku caught up with him. He was in the middle of getting attacked by a vengeful spirit in a cave at the time, so Miroku had other things to worry about.
Beyond the con artist routine, Hachi's proven surprisingly reliable when it counts. He regularly helps InuYasha's group get around, and he's willing to put himself in serious danger ferrying them through enemy territory or smuggling them to safety when things get hairy. It's a weird friendship, but he sticks with them.
