Rygart is the main protagonist. Born an un-sorcerer in a world where magic is the norm, he can't use it—something that set him apart from almost everyone around him. His father, determined to keep him and his un-sorcerer brother from feeling like outcasts, sold off all their Quartz-operated tools and worked with conventional equipment instead. It was a deliberate choice to build them up differently. Eventually, after taking on debt, his father managed to get Rygart into Assam Military School, where he found his people: Zess, Hodr, and Sigyn. The four of them became notorious enough to earn the collective nickname "the four problem children of Assam's Military School," with Rygart himself infamous as the "King of Make-up tests."
He's never been one for violence, which makes his later role somewhat ironic. As the series progresses, he becomes the pilot of the Delphine, an ancient Golem that can only be operated by someone without magic—essentially a Heavy Knight for the nation of Krisna. He initially enlists claiming he wants to protect his brother and friends, but eventually admits the real reason: he's fighting for Sigyn, who he's in love with.
Over time, war wears him down. After witnessing a close friend and companion die in battle, something shifts in him. He stops hesitating. He learns the brutal calculus of combat—kill or be killed—and his fighting style becomes noticeably more ruthless and decisive.
