A high-ranking spy and ninja with an unusual passion for art, Sōri got pulled into political scheming largely because European paintings and sculptures were forbidden contraband during his era—and he wanted access to them. He's got a daughter named Tatsu and goes way back with the Asano clan from childhood.
When Rin seeks him out hoping for backup against the Ittō-ryū, he's reluctant at first. Eventually though, he comes through with thirty ryō to help her cause. Later, after Manji takes a serious injury, Sōri patches him up and fills him in on who's really orchestrating the Mugai-ryū. He also brings on Magatsu to keep an eye on Tatsu while he's away working on his paintings—though fans often note there's something more going on there. Manji picks up on this himself after talking with Magatsu in volume 12.
