Valkenhayn has served the Alucard family for centuries as their butler, and he takes that job seriously. He's sharp-tongued and genuinely protective of Rachel, though he's a bit of a snob about who she associates with—he's especially disapproving of Ragna, viewing him as beneath her station. Despite his prissy demeanor, there's something more dangerous lurking underneath. Rachel occasionally drops hints that he used to be some kind of vigilante himself, and honestly, the evidence backs it up.
He can lose it in a fight. When Hazama insulted Rachel during Continuum Shift, Valkenhayn's voice dropped, his teeth turned to fangs, and he went genuinely feral. He's also got weird supernatural abilities: he can teleport people he touches, and he knows some kind of brutal technique that helped unlock Jin Kisaragi's hidden power after Rachel kidnapped him. Interestingly, that same technique actually blocked Jin from using his sword properly until he figured out the mental block himself and became its true master.
The real bombshell is that Valkenhayn is one of the Six Heroes and a genuine powerhouse. He's a Beastkin—same as Jubei and Makoto—which means he's lived an absurdly long time. He fought the Black Beast centuries ago without even needing a weapon, something no other hero in that battle can claim. Before all that, he and Clavis Alucard were bitter rivals who eventually became friends. When Clavis disappeared under mysterious circumstances, Valkenhayn devoted himself to protecting his daughter Rachel, and that loyalty hasn't wavered since.
