Hitsugaya grew up in Junrinan, the first district of Rukongai, where he lived with his grandmother, Momo Hinamori, and a few others. He became a Shinigami not long after Hinamori did, and he's also close with Jidanbou, the West Gate Keeper—actually, he's the one who taught Jidanbou all the rules of the city.
As a kid, he was kind of a brat. He'd mess with Hinamori constantly, eating watermelons and getting on her case, while she called him "Shiro-chan" and he'd fire back with "Bed-wetter Momo." They were genuinely close though, and despite being younger and way shorter, Hitsugaya always felt like he had to look out for her. Watermelon and sweet nattō are still his go-to foods, and he's never gotten over his hatred of hot weather.
His raw talent got him into the Shinigami academy quickly, right after Hinamori. She stuck with "Shiro-chan" for years until he unlocked his Zanpakutou and was properly recognized as a Shinigami—that's when she switched to calling him "Hitsugaya-kun" out of respect. With his sharp mind and natural ability, he climbed fast, eventually becoming the youngest captain in the entire Gotei 13.
