Souun runs the Tendou household and is the keeper of the Anything Goes school of martial arts—one of only two families that practice it. As a widower raising three daughters on his own, he's got his hands full. The family dojo is his, though students aren't really a visible presence in the series. He does rent it out occasionally for community events, and townspeople tend to show up at his door whenever weird stuff goes down, which probably helps with the bills.
Speaking of bills, Souun's pretty tight with money. He gets visibly annoyed when Nabiki blows through his savings or when Ranma wastes food, and the house itself needs constant repairs thanks to all the martial arts chaos happening inside it. In the anime, he spends a ton of time playing Shogi with Genma, his old training buddy.
His main obsession is getting Ranma and Akane together—seriously, any hint of romance between them and he's already daydreaming about wedding announcements. He's convinced their love could secure the future of his school. When he gets frustrated, he'll literally manifest as a ghostly floating oni head and wail "Oh, the humanity!"—it's his whole thing. He's also quick to blame Ranma whenever something goes wrong, though he's genuinely protective of his daughters and gets upset if he thinks they don't care about him.
Hinako's clearly into him, but Souun stays loyal to his late wife's memory and regularly visits her grave.
