Kyoya starts out as the ruthless leader of the Face Hunters, a gang of local bladers who basically terrorize their town—bullying other bladers and stealing their beypoints for kicks. When word gets to him about Ginga Hagane, he's immediately intrigued and wants to test the guy's abilities. He orchestrates this whole ambush where Ginga shows up at a warehouse surrounded by a hundred bladers, all ready to throw down. Kyoya watches from a beam, cool and collected, waiting to see what Ginga's actually made of. Unsurprisingly, Ginga wipes the floor with all of them, and Kyoya finally gets his shot—but loses the one-on-one battle when Ginga's Pegasus outperforms his Leone.
Later, a powerful blader named Daidoji approaches him with an offer: training that could make him strong enough to beat Ginga. Kyoya's not an idiot though—he gets suspicious fast and challenges Daidoji to prove his worth. Bad call. Daidoji crushes him with Dark Wolf, and that's the end of Kyoya's tenure with the Face Hunters. He ditches them and boards Daidoji's helicopter instead.
Things get intense from there. Daidoji drops him in Wolf Canyon with instructions to climb to the top—a brutal training regimen that involves scaling dangerous rocky cliffs in brutal weather, with actual wolves trying to eat him. The ordeal awakens something feral in Kyoya. He goes through a dark phase where he's violent, cold, and basically forgets who his friends even are.
When Kyoya challenges Ginga for a rematch in Episode 10, the battle is genuinely close. Ginga's almost losing until the crowd around the stadium starts cheering him on—that emotional boost is enough to tip the scales. By the end, Kyoya remembers what he and Leone have actually been through together, and what beyblading is supposed to mean. It's a genuine moment of growth.
Then Daidoji shows up in his helicopter and completely kills the mood. He "thanks" Kyoya for his training by attacking him with his bey, leaving Kyoya badly injured and Leone damaged.
The next morning Kyoya wakes up covered in bandages with Benkei relieved to see him conscious. Madoka comes in with his fully repaired Leone, which catches Kyoya off guard—why would they go to that much trouble for an enemy? Her answer is simple: they couldn't just leave him. After that, Kyoya joins forces with Ginga and his crew to take down Daidoji and the Dark Nebula once and for all.
